Before we talk about the game we want to welcome Joel to the team. Perhaps he is our good luck charm because the Strikers started the season off with a dominant 5-3 win against Oxford. Daniel too has returned to the team after his injury and is looking stronger than ever.
In a complete team effort that included strong passing and numerous shot attempts the Strikers didn’t miss a beat from last year and played one of their best games as a team.
The Strikers started the game with Kyle and Duncan playing forward, Jason in mid-Center and Joel and Daniel anchoring the defense with Justin manning the goal.
With numerous passes and strong play to the sidelines the team led 4-0 at the half with everyone contributing. The scoring started off with a corner from Kyle that hit a defender and ended up in the goal. That started a quick series of goals including a great throw-in by Idris to Jason for a nifty goal, Kyle again scoring with a nice pass from Jason and then Duncan netting a goal off a throw-in by Kyle.
Justin played a tremendous first half with decisive decisions and deep punts to the wings. Daniel and Joel completely shut-down the Oxford offensive who along with Mathew and David really helped to jump start offensive opportunities and then they had the chance they drove the ball up the field. I think just about everyone and a good chance for a goal in the 1st half.
The second half had David, Matt and Idris upfront with Daniel and Joel once again on defense and Duncan as goalie. In the 2nd half the coaches asked the players to focus on multiple pass attempts before shooting on goal and they did a great job of sharing the ball and spreading out. While Oxford had 3 goals in the second half the Strikers capped off their last goal of the game off a nice pass from Kyle to Dylan who charged the net and the defenders and hit a nice low angle shot into the back of the net. We also saw some serious footwork from Matt, Jason and Dylan as they not only completed perfect passes but even went backward when they needed to. David and Daniel also worked great together as they always can seem to find each other on the field for smart passing.
A great team effort with smart passing and a lot of patience by the team.
