Strikers show potential but fall to the Sanford Thunder…
On a muggy 92 degree day the Strikers traveled 30 minutes south of Cary to Sanford to a play the Thunder. While they showed some strong play early trailing only 1-3 the first half, they ended up on the short end of an 8-1 score. The definite highlight of the day was a beautifully struck floating corner kick from Kyle which Matt pounced on from a full leap in front of the box and headed into the goal that early on tied the game 1-1. Words cannot express what a sweet header it was and should have counted for 2 goals!!
Other highlights include good shot attempts from Idris, Jason, Joel and Kyle who nearly scored but hit the top of the goal. Justin as goalie also played well in the first half with other members of the team including Matt, Daniel, David and Duncan helping to limit the Thunder’s scoring attempts in the 1st half. In the second half, the Strikers came out flat and appeared to revert to some old habits including soft clears and passes and not sending crisp passes after one or two touches. They also often poked at the ball on defense vs. staying with a man and being aggressive and tried to individually advance the ball in the middle or defensive side of the field which led to turnovers. The Strikers started to pick up the intensity towards the end of the game. By that point however, the game had already been decided. We know that they will work together as a team for the upcoming matches.
