'99 Strikers

Regular Season 2009

Welcome to the Official '99 Strikers Homepage!

The '99 Strikers Challenge team was formed in 2009 and underwent a coaching change in 2010 as most of the players aged up to U11. As the Challenge playing level is a developmental level, the coaches are focusing on core ball skills, comfort with the ball, having fun, and learning to play together. Let's put our best foot forward!

A Blast At the Beach

05/24/2010, 7:58am (EST)

A Blast at the Beach
The U10 Strikers traveled to Wilmington for their final tournament and set of games as a team.
Day 1 had them playing two games.
Day 1, Game 1 vs. CRSC Black @ 10:30 am.
The Strikers faced a very tough team in their 1st game of the tournament and started off slowly by falling behind by 4 goals in the 1st half due to some lapses (and flat play) early in the game. That said the 1st half even with the 4 goals showed some good defense, a few scoring opportunities and multiple corner kick opportunities. The 1st half could be summed up by saying “one too few passes and just a step slow to deliver the ball”.
The 2nd half was much stronger with the Strikers showing good energy and they even outscored CRSC 2-1 in the second half including a nice pass by Joel to Duncan for a goal and great unassisted goal by Matt. Matt intercepted a goal kick and managed to avoid 2 defenders to score off a strong ball. The team had numerous scoring chances and ended on a strong note but still came up short 2-5.
Day 1, Game 2 vs. FCCA Huntersville at 3:30 pm
In a very close second game the Strikers started off quickly with 2-0 lead off of a Kyle assist to Matt for a score and Dylan assisting to Matt for a 2nd goal. FCCA came back to make it 2-2. The rest of the match was a physical and emotional roller coaster including a score from Dylan off Kyle’s corner kick as well as a penalty kick that was awarded to FCCA off a late call. Penalty calls are supposed to be immediately called and play halted – but in this case play went for several seconds before the kick was awarded. Kyle later scored off another Dylan assist to make the game close but the Strikers ended up losing 7-4. It should be noted that the Strikers played very well including strong goal keeping and defense by Daniel, David, Joel and Justin and everyone contributing with key stops and passes including Idris, Jason and Duncan. That said, the Strikers got few calls and played a physical game. The other team was unsportsmanlike in words and actions including a near yellow card issued to a player on their team for close contact with Justin, our goalie. Our opponents also scored at least three goals by playing an offensive player behind our defense –which in U11 and beyond is considered offside and not allowed. Given the circumstances the team played hard, didn’t get breaks but never quit – a definite character building moment.
Day 2, Game 3 vs. CASL Aztecs
In their final game as a U10 team the Strikers played a fine match, but it was one of those games that the score doesn’t indicate the dominance of another team. The game ended up being a 0-1 loss even though the Strikers had a 3 to 4 times the advantage on shots on goal. For large stretches of the game, we were on the offensive side of the field with a near goal coming from Kyle – one shot looked like it crossed the goal line but wasn’t ruled a goal. In addition Jason, Duncan, Matt, Dylan and Idris had good shot attempts. Daniel and David also go into the act with some sterling defense, headers and deep kicks to the offensive side. When you add in some great goal keeping by Justin and strong defense by Joel you have one exciting game. The team worked hard to the final whistle and parents and relatives should be proud!
We want to also thank the Bumgarner’s (Justin’s parents) for arranging the lunches, dinners and hotels and want to issue a final thank you to the Coach’s for their support and guidance. Next year half the team moves up to U11 so we wish the U10 and U11 teams the best of luck.
Here is the Striker leader table for goals and assists for the full U10 season:
Goals: Kyle (31), Matt (10), Jason (9)
Assists: Jason (13), Kyle (9), Idris and Duncan (7 each).
We couldn’t keep track of all the headers, strong clears and goal saves so kudos to the entire team for contributing and working hard all year!
Thank you to the coaches for their ultimate knowledge of the game, patience and unending words of praise for our children. Best of luck in the Fall - Go Strikers!

Strikers Play Hard Against GCAA

Strikers Play Hard Against GCAA
In a tough fought contest, the Strikers came up a little short 3-5 against GCAA at home. The positive outcomes from the game included plenty of offensive chances, some nice passing and overall some consistent strong play after the first few minutes of the game. While they quickly fell behind 0-3 in the match due to some strong corner kicks by the opponents and a penalty shot early on due to a hand ball, the Strikers maintained their poise and rallied to make it a 2-3 game at the half. They played a close match in the 2nd half of the game. The Striker defense came together as the game went on and the team had the momentum until the final whistle. Highlights include a goal from Kyle to start the match off of a nice pass from Matt to get the team to a 1-3 score. A few minutes later Jason scored off a nice shot from the top of the box from an Idris pass. The final score was off an unassisted blast from Justin who intercepted the opponent’s goal kick. His kick looked good as soon as it left his foot. Joel, Dylan and Idris did a nice job on both sides of the field and helped to disrupt the passing lanes and get the ball to the wing. Daniel was strong on defense with several key clears and did a great job as the keeper in the 2nd half. Duncan did a nice job playing the middle of the field and maintaining control of the ball and had some good deliveries to his teammates.
Finally, we would like to congratulate Kyle for achieving his 30th goal of the U10 season (Fall 2009 and Spring 2010).   Our next stop and the last games for this team will be at next weeks Wilmington tournament. We will (of course) provide a full write-up and we will also recognize our top 3 players for goals and assists for the year in our season ending write-up.

Strikers Show Potential but Fall to the Sanford Thunder

Strikers show potential but fall to the Sanford Thunder…
On a muggy 92 degree day the Strikers traveled 30 minutes south of Cary to Sanford to a play the Thunder. While they showed some strong play early trailing only 1-3 the first half, they ended up on the short end of an 8-1 score. The definite highlight of the day was a beautifully struck floating corner kick from Kyle which Matt pounced on from a full leap in front of the box and headed into the goal that early on tied the game 1-1. Words cannot express what a sweet header it was and should have counted for 2 goals!!
Other highlights include good shot attempts from Idris, Jason, Joel and Kyle who nearly scored but hit the top of the goal. Justin as goalie also played well in the first half with other members of the team including Matt, Daniel, David and Duncan helping to limit the Thunder’s scoring attempts in the 1st half. In the second half, the Strikers came out flat and appeared to revert to some old habits including soft clears and passes and not sending crisp passes after one or two touches. They also often poked at the ball on defense vs. staying with a man and being aggressive and tried to individually advance the ball in the middle or defensive side of the field which led to turnovers. The Strikers started to pick up the intensity towards the end of the game. By that point however, the game had already been decided. We know that they will work together as a team for the upcoming matches.
