TYSC 99 Fury and TYSC 98 Lazers enjoy success at the 4th Annual Triangle United RBC Fall Classic 2010

Two of our younger Challenge soccer teams, the 99 Fury and the 98 Lazers participated in this years Triangle United RBC Fall Classic soccer tournament, as a fun pre-season event, coming home with a well earned second and first place.

The 99 Fury (U11G), a brand new team formed this year and with only one scrimmage game under their belts, exceeded all expectations with a solid 2-2-0 record, making it all the way to the final. Coached expertly by Lisa and Ellen, the team grabbed lots of experience and bonding time and can all be extremely proud of their results in their first ever tournament. Everyone in the program is looking forward to watching their progress during the Fall season.

The 98 Lazers (U12B) rocked the tournament with a perfect 4-0-0 record and a fantastic GF:26 and GA:5 record.  The boys came out of the starting blocks strongly and never wavered or slowed down, quickly becoming the team to beat in their age bracket. Coached by Magnus, Beanie and Rich - a mixture of great possession, strong defense and cohesive team-work – paid off in results and entertaining soccer. Goals were shared by 9 of the 12 players and their new motto: “defend deep, attack wide, shoot hard” was born.

While you are waiting...

1) Work Out Journal: The link below is a great workout journal for you daughter to use this summer and this season.  It helps do a few things: 1) keep the girls active; 2) continue to focus writing skills; 3) make a great keepsake when the girls get older to remember their time with Fury.

2) Girls' Homework Assignment: Soccer and Conditioning

Watch at least 1/2 of either world cup game on Saturday and Sunday. (45 mintues)  Look for quality spacing, trapping, shooting, and passing.  After the game ask your daughter to name 1 or 2 things that they saw during the game that they'd like to implement in their play this season.

Conditioning.  Work out for 30 minutes, 3 times next week.  Swimming, biking, running, roller blading, playing soccer are all suggestions.  Our first tournament is in 7 weeks and conditioning will be a critical component for having a successful season.

First Assignment!

With World Cup getting into full swing, I'd like to give the girls (and parents) an assignment.  Please have your daughter watch at least part of one world cup game this week.  This is a great family experience.  The ESPN World Cup TV schedule can be found at the following link: http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2010/espns-world-cup-2010-tv-schedule.html

Here are the things that I'd like for you to point out while watching:

Passing: Notice how even the professionals take a touch to settle and then look to pass.  Good passing is essential to a successful team. Stress a touch to settle the ball and then look up to pass.

Trapping: Notice how a ball played in the air from a goal kick, punt, or pass does NOT bounce to the ground.   A player will get their head, chest, or foot on the ball before it hits the ground.  I think this is traditionally the weakest part of the game at this age so we will be focusing on receiving balls out of the air but it makes the concept easier if the girls see it at this level.

Spacing: Notice how the players without the ball are working to get into good position to receive a pass from the player with the ball.  Spacing means getting into open space so there is a clear line of sight between both players.  If there is an opposing player between the 2 players, then the player without the ball is NOT in proper space. Note to your daughter that passing can even be backwards to open up the field.
